Massage After A Car Accident

Did you know you can get massage therapy after a car accident and, in a lot of cases, it will be paid for by your insurance? After a car accident, massage therapy is one of the best things you can do for yourself to begin the healing process. Not only does it help to heal injured and sore muscles, it helps with mental trauma and stress from the accident. Massage therapy is a necessary treatment to receive after a car accident, even if it “wasn’t that bad”. A small fender bender can make muscles extremely sore and can sometimes cause whiplash which can trigger other injuries later on.

Massage therapy creates circulation and starts blood flow which helps the muscles to heal. Soft tissue damage can occur and massage therapy can help the muscles heal from injuries such as whiplash, sore muscles, and small strains. These injuries can cause the muscles to become stiff and cause poor range of motion and stiffness.

What are the steps to start massage therapy after a car accident?

1. Visit your primary care provider as soon as possible after the car accident. Let them know how you are feeling and ask for a prescription for massage therapy and chiropractic care.

2. If you have PIP (personal injury protection) on your car insurance policy, they will pay for treatment for you after your accident. You must have a prescription to see a massage therapist for your injuries. Call your insurance company to verify you have this coverage. Your massage therapist will be able to handle all of the paperwork after they are given the name and contact info of your insurance company. You do not have to worry about dealing with any of those details.

3. Rest and hydrate. Take it easy and take care of yourself.

4. When you find a good massage therapist, they will go over the treatment plan with you and make sure you are getting the exact care that you need.

How long will I need treatment after my accident?

The length of treatment depends on the person. Each body heals differently so the length of time cannot be determined right away. Making sure to do the things your therapist recommends doing at home in between visits will help with the process.

How do I choose the right massage therapist?

Do your research. A good massage therapist typically has good reviews and a few years of experience from their education as well as working with treatment and car accident customers in the past. Get in contact with a massage therapist you find online or from referrals from a friend and ask all of the questions that you want to. The massage therapist should also be willing to do all of the paperwork and find out all of your insurance information. You should not have to worry about that part of the process, you are already going through enough. Your health and your healing are what matter, make sure you feel comfortable with the massage therapist that you choose.
